Police in Otuke District have arrested a man who allegedly received the sum of 20 million shillings from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and never delivered it to the target recipient.
Patrick Okwir, 45, who is the chairman of the construction and building committee of Adyerakonya Church of Uganda, reportedly received the money that was delivered by the State House Office as the president’s contribution towards building the church on July 28, 2023, but never delivered it. According to Moses Opio, 38, a leader at the same church, Okwir reportedly received the money and did not declare it. Opio said they were shocked to learn that Okwir had already received the money, and when asked, he only presented some Ugx12 million. On May 18, 2023, the church leaders requested financial support from Museveni to enable them to complete the construction of the Adyerakonya Church of Uganda building. President Museveni later responded to their request by delivering the money through a State House aide. SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, has said a case of theft has been registered against the suspect. He is currently being detained at Otuke Central Police Station. |
