President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has promoted Major General Sam Kavuma to the rank of Lieutenant General and subsequently deployed him to Somalia.
Lt. Gen. Kavuma has now replaced Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding, who had been the ATMIS commander in Mogadishu until recently, when he was appointed the deputy Chief of Defense Forces.
Col.Deo Akiiki, the UPDF Spokesperson, confirmed the development, saying the appointment takes immediate effect.
“Having been appointed deputy CDF, Lt Gen Sam Okiding will return home from Somalia, and Maj Gen Sam Kavuma has been promoted to the rank of Lt Gen and appointed ATMIS Force Commander to replace him. Promotion and appointment take immediate effect,” said Col.Akiiki.
Recently, President Museveni appointed Gen.Okiding as the Deputy CDF and Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba as the CDF, among others.
WHO IS LT.GEN. KAVUMA?
Major General Sam Kavuma is a Ugandan senior military officer who recently served as the deputy coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation since June 24, 2021, after he was appointed by Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
He also once served as the deputy commander of the Uganda People’s Defense Force Air Force and as the commander of the Uganda People’s Defense Force Contingent in Somalia, as part of the African Union Mission to Somalia. He was appointed to that position in October 2014. He replaced Maj. Gen. Dick Olum, who served in that position from September 2013 until October 2014.
In 2011, at the rank of colonel, Sam Kavuma was the Commanding Officer of the Uganda People’s Defence Force 5th Division, based in Pader, Northern Uganda. On September 18, 2011, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier, and in July 2013, He was also the commander of the Regional Taskforce against the LRA in South Sudan and the Central African Republic (CAR).
