Police in Amolatar district are probing circumstances led to the murder of an Indian construction site engineer by the Uganda People’s Defense Forces soldier.
The deceased has been identified as Thirumalesh Itikala 41, an Indian national who was the construction site engineer and manager of Royal Velko Joint Venture Ltd. and a resident of Mbiko landing site in Namasale Town Council in Amolatar District.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, said the incident occurred from Mbiko cell, Aweipeko Ward Namasale Town Council Amolator District, on Friday, 4th Oct 2024, at around 0930 hours.
It’s alleged that No. RA 255450 private Tolit James Opio, aged 38 years old, a UPDF soldier attached to Namasale infantry detach and deployed at Royal Velko Joint Venture Ltd., reported back at work on the 1st of October 2024, later on the 3rd of October 2024.
Police said, “The soldier reported for work on 4th Oct 2024 at around 9am and complained to his fellow guards of less guard allowance paid to him, and shortly at around 09300 hours, Tolit came in front of the office of the manager and found him communicating on the phone; he shot him in the chest and left through the main gate of the site for about 50 meters and shot himself in the neck and died instantly.”
The victim was rushed to Amolatar Health Center IV, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
“The scene of the crime was visited by a team of police officers led by the DPC Amolatar; the scene was examined and documented. Statement obtained from the eyewitnesses. Both bodies conveyed to Amolatar Health Center IV pending postmortem examination,” said Okema.
This is a sad and unfortunate incident, we appeal to supervisors at all work places to always engage staffs or security deployed to provide protection to listen to their problems and act accordingly.
