A total of 11 activists have petitioned the Constitutional Court, seeking to block the implementation of the Anti-Gay Act 2023.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni assented to it on Monday, May 29th, 2023.

The petitioners include journalists Andrew Muwenda, former Makerere University lecturer of law Prof. Sylvia Tamale, Dr. Busingye Kabumba, senior Makerere University lecturer of law, and Budama North East MP Fox Odoi, among others.

They want the court to issue a permanent injunction prohibiting the implementation of the law in Uganda.

The petitioners claimed the behaviour of the Speaker Anita Annet Among during the debate and the passing of the bill amounted to bias contrary to articles 20, 89(1), and (2) of the Constitution.

They claim the law promotes a culture of hatred and relates to social misfits.

UNAIDS, the Global Fund, and PEPFAR have all condemned the law, claiming that it will have a negative impact on HIV support.
