Alebtong district has kicked off the construction of 10 roads and four local bridges in a bid to ease movement within all the sub-counties and create access to different markets.
While launching the constructions on Thursday, May 9th, 2024, the area woman, MP Dorcas Acen, who is also the chairperson of the Alebtong district roads committee, said all the selected roads and bridges whose works are already ongoing will be completed this financial year.
MP Acen said five roads and two bridges whose works are ongoing are in Ajuri County, while the rest are in Moroto County, and it will cost the sum of Shs500 million.
“In the first two quarters of this running financial year, as Alebtong, we constructed 11 community roads and built four bridges. So in this financial year alone, we shall have a total of 22 roads constructed and many bridges built,” said MP Acen.
Some of the roads selected for construction from the Ajuri side include Alebtong-Iceda-Okut-Ajuri (16 km), Abako-Ojul-Teowelo (11 km), Amugu-Ajuri swamp-Amononeno (6km), Ogowie-Baropiro-Amugu (13.4 km), and Obangangeo-Omoro-Otuke (22.5 km).
In Moroto county, according to MP Acen, there are a total of six roads, including Aloi-Oloo bridge (15km), Alebtong-Awiny/Anara (11km), Alebtong Town Council-Anino station-Alela (11 km), Akura-Oteno-Abia (12km), Yatamenya-Omele-Akura (10km), and Tedwii-Orupu-Bar sub-county border (8km).
Government Chief Whip Denis Hamson Obua, also the Ajuri County Member of Parliament, called for calmness, saying the problem of appealing road status is everywhere.
GCW Obua says the selected roads will ensure interconnectedness in all the sub counties in the district.
He says they will first focus on upgrading existing roads before embarking on opening new ones.
“Let’s thank President Museveni for prioritizing government commitment in an attempt to upgrade roads; that’s why we now have the Shs1billion grant for each district in Uganda,” said GCW Obua.
David Kennedy Odongo, the Alebtong LCV District Chairperson, credited the two MPs for their continuous lobbying for the district.
“I once contested against GCW Obua in 2016, but I lost. Right now, I will not contest against him because he is doing everything for us. Schools and health centers are being constructed, and he is still lobbying for development,” said Odongo.
Odongo DK vowed to campaign for GCW Obua and MP Acen in 2026, much as he is from the opposition UPC party.
