Amb Ogwang Okul Elected New Won Nyaci of Lango, What You Must Know About Him

Ambassador Dickson Ogwang Okul, the leader of the Palaocol clan, has been elected and declared the new Won Nyaci of Lango.

On Friday, October 11th, 2024, the Lango Cultural Foundation conducted the first adult suffrage election for the successor of His Highness Yosam Odur, the current Won Nyaci of Lango.

Col. (Rtd.) Dan Opito Odwe, the Chairperson of the Lango Cultural Foundation Electoral Commission, declared Amb Dickson Ogwang Okul the rightfully elected next Won Nyaci of Lango.

Amb Ogwang secured 76,306 representing 60%, Dr. Richard Nam got 31,920 (25%), Benjamin Okii got 12,513 (10%), and Dr. Dan Okello got 4834 (10%).

The results were declared at 12:10 a.m. at the regional tally center at Lira Palm Gardens.

The election of Amb Ogwang Okul is viewed as the last stage of struggle to replace the aging current Won Nyaci of Lango HH Odur, who served for over 20 years.

Amb. Ogwang, a senior lawyer, is the current Deputy Head of Mission and the Head of Commercial and Economic Diplomacy at the embassy of Uganda in Khartoum, Sudan.

He is also in charge of public diplomacy and media relations, responsible for all matters relating to AU, IGAD, ICGLR, UNAMID, and UN Agencies.

Amb Ogwang holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere University, Kampala and a Masters of Administrative Science in Diplomacy and International Relations from Farleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck, NJ;

Ogwang as an expert in disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of ex-combatants, is a strong believer in negotiated settlement of disputes of all forms and magnitudes.

He holds a certified proven skills in preserving and promoting individual and social cohesion through conflict coaching, negotiation, mediation, and arbitration.

With over 25 years of professional development in national and international leadership, Amb. Ogwang has a broad understanding of the socio-economic and political environments of Uganda and the region; he is trained and experienced in various aspects of law and justice, grace and peace, ethics and equity, public relations, diplomacy, international relations, and professionalism.

Ogwang previously worked as a member of Uganda’s armed forces, a seasoned diplomat and government spokesperson in the United States, and served as a public prosecutor in the Directorate of Public Prosecutions with specialized training in criminal justice, investigative intelligence, and litigation.

 A recipient of a number of Distinguished Service Awards, including the Presidential Award for his role in the Northern Uganda Pacification, Amb. Ogwang was appointed by the President of Uganda, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, in 2010 as Deputy Ambassador to Washington, D.C.

Between August and November 2010, the president assigned him as Special Presidential Envoy to the United States to work on Counter-Lords Resistant Army (LRA) and Northern Uganda Peace and Recovery Issues.

He served as Officer responsible for the Political, Peace & Security Affairs Department, in charge of Public Diplomacy and Embassy Spokesperson, Deputy Chief of Mission, and later as Charge of Affairs, Uganda Embassy, Washington, DC.

Amb Ogwang was recalled to Headquarters after a tour of duty in January 2018 and deployed at the Regional & International Economic Affairs Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kampala, where he served at the Diaspora Department for three years with the mandate of mobilizing the Uganda Diaspora abroad for national growth and development.
