The Apac Hospital Anaesthetist, Sabina Acen has been arrested by the police on allegations of illegal charge of a patient.
She was picked up by the security operatives on Tuesday on the orders of Apac RDC George Abdul and is currently being detained at Apac CPS on an allegation of extortion of money from the patient.
It is alleged that Acen demanded Shs200,000 from the parents of a child aged 1 year and 3 months suffering from hernia who was due for surgical operations, claiming the money would be given to the surgeon and without which the child wouldn’t be operated.
According to the child’s parents, they were later sent away by Acen to go and look for the required money, a move that prompted them to petition RDC’s office.
“Immediately, detectives were organised who disguised themselves as brothers to the patient and later on picked Acen up red-handed after receiving the money. Why should patients pay for such services at a government hospital?” RDC Abdul asked.
RDC Abdul said this wasn’t the first allegation of extortion against health workers at Apac Hospital. He said his office had previously received various claims of extortion from patients by medical workers.
“We have been getting reports that some surgeons ask for bribes of between Shillibgs 300,000 and 500,000 for all surgeries, and this money is collected through agents at the hospital. The list of such dubious health workers has been compiled, and should they not reform, we shall ensure the long hand of the law works on them,” Abdul said.
