Residents of Barlonyo trading center in Agweng Sub County, Lira district have finally got tap clean water after 20 years.
In 2004, suspected Lord’s Resistance Army rebels attacked and massacred over 300 civilians who had taken refuge at Barlonyo IDP camp.
Since then, the area was later turned into a commercial center but residents continued to face shortage of clean water sources.
Last year, Otuke Harvest Foundation, a local organization operating in Northern Uganda initiated a drive to construct a solar powered water source for the residents.
Joseph Opio, the Program Coordinator at Otuke Harvest Foundation said the construction works is due for completion.
“We have used nearly 300 million shillings to construct the water source and it will soon be launched and handed over to community and area authority before end of February,” said Opio.
Opio said the construction works is so far at about 90% adding that the water will save local residents from trekking long distance to fetch water.
Engineer Lawrence Obong, the project supervisor confirmed that by 15th February 2024 the work will be completed and water will be flowing.
Currently, the former massacre site where over 300 people were killed has only one borehole serving local residents from about five villages including students from Barlonyo Agro Technical Institute.
