The decision by the government to enter into a partnership with an Egyptian construction firm to upgrade Akii Bua Memorial Stadium in Lira City in preparation to host AFCON 2027 has sparked immense excitement among residents.
On Thursday, February 29th, the Minister of Sport, Peter Ogwang, led a team of Egyptian contractors and officials from the National Council of Sports to inspect the proposed site.
“Plans to construct Aki Bua Stadium in Lira City have been finalized after we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Joint Venture of Khator Sports and SAMCO to construct the stadium in less than 20 months,” said Minister Ogwang.
He said the first phase of this project will cost approximately 260 billion shillings and will accommodate over 20,000 spectators.
Minister Ogwang said the contractor will finance and build the stadium on a pre-finance basis.
“This sports infrastructure is a critical project in our preparations to host the 2027 AFCON, and therefore, it will be fast-tracked for its timely completion. I thank H.E. President Kaguta Museveni and the Minister of Education and Sports, First Lady Janet Museveni, for identifying the contractor,” said Minister Ogwang.
Linda Auma, the Lira district Woman Member of Parliament welcomed the decision and asked government to commit to ensure the project is successfully concluded.
Previously, the government had rescinded the decision to build Akii-Bua Stadium to host AFCON matches in 2027.
