Eating Meat Processed at Lira City Abattoir: “A Death Trap”

Date:

It was on Thursday, April 20, 2023, when a friend took me to the Lira City Abattoir to go and buy food for my dogs.

On reaching there, I could not believe what my eyes saw, a very filthy place that is not compatible with where human food can be processed.

Surprisingly, I was told that even our city health inspectors stamp those meats every morning, qualifying them as fit for human consumption.

Meat slaughtered and processed in such a place is known for creating diseases such as salmonella or trichinosis, caused by ingesting food that is contaminated with bacteria, parasites, and viruses.

It also causes foodborne intoxication, either bacterial, such as E. coli, or chemical, where food has been contaminated with toxic chemicals, such as cleaning compounds or pesticides.

Two particularly dangerous foodborne bacteria that can cause serious illness require special attention: Clostridium botulinum, which can develop in vacuum-packed and canned foods, and Listeria monocytogenes, which occurs due to poor cleaning.

The author is a concerned senior citizen living in Lira City.

  1. Your writing is always lacking! wtf! It does not make sense when you don’t provide a comprehensive report upon your study. However, you have a good platform to communicate pertinent issues affecting Lira.
