Lira Golf Course was a beehive of activities on Saturday as golfers displayed talents in a tournament organized by Lira Gold Club in memory of their fallen stars.
It should be recalled that in less than a decade, Lango Golf Club lost three of their prominent players, who included the late Professor Opio Ekong, the former VC of All Saints University Lango; Dr. James Eyul, the former in charge of epidemics at Entebbe International Airport; and Wilson Okae, a renowned biker.
Speaking to this publication at the sidelines of the tournament at Lira Golf Course, Pastor Anthony Omara, one of the leaders of Lira Golf Club, said the game was hosted in Lira to celebrate the lives of the fallen Lango sons for their contributions in the development and promotion of golf in Lango and Uganda.
He added that the tournament is also aimed at creating a network of golfers in the country and rallying the community of Lango to embrace golf as a prestigious discipline of sports.
The tournament is being proudly supported by Kinyara Sugar Limited.
Speaking to journalists in Lira City, Aldon Walukamba, the cooperative communication manager of Kinyara Sugar Ltd., said that besides their sponsorship, their team is also participating in the tournament.
According to Walukamba, in June, Kinyara Sugar Limited will further sponsor the Kabulega Memorial Golf Tournament.
He says Kinyara Sugar Ltd. enjoys the spirit of togetherness and the promotion of sports activities in different communities.
Walukamba himself, a golf player, stresses the importance of regularly playing golf, which, among others, includes physical health and fitness, and that it promotes unity in diversity.
Some of the clubs that have shown up in Lira include Mbale Golf Club, Kampala Golf Club, Entebbe Golf, Namolonge Golf, Arua Golf, Lira Golf, Namolonge Golf in Tororo, and Kinyara Golf.
“It’s not true; golf games are the best game ever. I joined three years ago, and I am enjoying it. It improves health, and anyone can play it; there’s no age limit.”
Caro Aduku, a female player for Lira Golf Club, meanwhile, called on her fellow women to join the game of golf and actively participate.She said playing golf increases one’s life span.
