How MP Obong Eyit Remained Tight-Lipped in Parliament for a Year

Date:

The third session of the 11th Parliament commenced on June 7, 2023, to May 16, 2024, during which a total of 87 plenary sittings were conducted, 17 petitions were handled, 47 bills were passed, and five MPs were granted leave of Parliament to introduce private members’ bills, among other vital activities of national importance. The house also paid tribute to fallen members of the family seven times.

In one year, several Members of Parliament from Lango and other regions spoke less than 20 times, saved by the exclusive submissions of MP Jonathan Odur (Erute South) who spoke 181 times implying he spoke twice in every sitting, MP Santa Alum, GCW Denis Hamson Obua, Dr. Opio Acuti, and MP Linda Agnes Auma of Lira District among others.

Today, we present to you the details of each of the of the top ten worst-performing legislators from the Lango region starting with Lira City West MP Shedrick Obong Eyit. In fact, most of these remained adamant to several calls by Speaker Anita Among and her deputy, Thomas Tayebwa, to at least speak, even if it was just a supplementary submission, so as to be recorded on the parliamentary Hansard.

Pundit believes that these worst-performing MPs have sworn affidavits to remain silent forever even if they are threatened with arrest warrants.

MP Vincent Obong Eyit: He represents Lira City West Division on the UPC ticket. He never talked, even once, and reportedly kept his mouth shut and sealed whenever he was attending a plenary session. On the scorecard, MP Obong scored 00.

Many people wondered why he never even opened his mouth for once just to say “May Her Soul Rest in Peace” recently when the body of the late Cecilia Ogwal was taken to Parliament, yet many MPs from Lango utilized this opportunity to enter parliamentary hansard as having talked in parliament.

It should also be recalled that during the second session of the 11th Parliament that ran from June 2022 to May 2023, MP Obong’s record remained peanut and scanty in the Parliamentary Hansard.

Despite not talking even once during the 3rd session of the 11th Parliament, MP Obong received his full salary and other allowances.

He further maintained his glaring visibility and presence at the Parliamentary Canteen, crashing delicious chicken wings, samosas, sausages, and quality breakfast at the service of charming curvaceous waitresses. In the constituency, MP Obong remained scunty from many gatherings, a move that has continued to anger his mobilizers.

While in Parliament, MP Obong only Talks from the corridors of the house, parking lot, Canteen and may be in the lift and during committee meeting once in a while.

Stay tuned for our next edition of analysis of how Lango MPs performed in the third session of the 11th Parliament.

Next on the list are MPs Maxwell Akora of Maruzi, Patrick Ocan, Abeja Susan of Otuke, Nelson Okello, and others who spoke less than 10 times.
