Businesses within Kampala Metropolitan Areas on October 4th remained operating normally despite a planned violent protest code named “One Million March” that was organised by the supporters of the National Unity Platform Party (NUP).
The March was intended to kick off from Entebbe International Airport shortly after receiving their party leader, Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, and later accompanying him through the old Entebbe road up to the city centre.
Unlike previously, businesses within Kampala Metropolitan Centre would wake up to complete jeopardy and interruptions courtesy of chaotic protests by the opposition.
SP Patrick Onyango, the Spokesperson of the Kampala Metropolitan Police confirmed that despite the heavy security presence, businesses across the board remained normally operated and the city was calm.
Bobi Wine was picked up from the airport before he could check in through the immigration system and possibly meet his supporters who had gathered there. He was immediately whisked to his home at Magere.
Teargas, bullets, and clashes that had often characterised security operations in a tremor to neutralise violent riots by the opposition stalwarts were never heard or witnessed in Kampala metropolitan as earlier on anticipated.
Prior to this, local traders at Kibuye Market had asked the government not to allow the one million March, claiming it would interfere with their businesses.
A security source revealed that operation to counter one million marchers was successfully executed due to critical intelligence conducted by the agencies.
While addressing journalists from his home, Bobi Wine asked security to release a few of his supporters who were arrested for organizing the One Million March.
Sources within NUP revealed that they had expected the Thursday protest to catch fire beyond the one of September 2021, when Kyagulanyi was apprehended from Eastern Uganda.
