Inside Government’s New Strategies to Curtail Road Accidents

Date:

The government has released new measures aimed at reducing the alarming motor accidents that have continued to claim the lives of people across the country.

This was resolved during the July 17th Cabinet sitting chaired by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at State House, Entebbe.

Dr. Chris Baryumonsi, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, said the government is concerned about the increased number of motor accidents.

According to Minister Baryumonsi, the Cabinet observed that road traffic crashes are mainly caused by human factors, and these are characterised by drink driving, over speeding, distracted driving (through use of phone while driving, eating while driving, etc.), fatigue, and other forms of reckless behaviour such as wrongful overtaking, road rage, impatience, frequent lane changes, and abandoned vehicles on carriageways, among others.

“The other observation made about major causes of accidents is the condition of the vehicles, characterised by defective and worn-out tyres, faulty brakes and engine failures, malfunctioning systems, and faulty and substandard parts, among others. Cabinet further observed that boda boda vehicles have continuously killed more people than other vehicle categories. The Cabinet resolved to decisively deal with these factors,” said Dr. Baryumonsi.

He said the new measures approved by the Cabinet include stepping up enforcement, effective regulation and management of road transport services, and increasing road safety sensitization and awareness.

Others are effective coordination of all road safety efforts and strengthening traffic and road safety legislation.

Early this week, the Speaker of Parliament, Anet Anita Among, directed the effective implementation of recently passed traffic laws by the police.

Her reactions stemmed from the recent incident in Kagadi district, where about 20 passengers travelling in a Taxi from Fort Portal City died during a motor accident.
