Lango Clan Chiefs Battling to Become the Next WONYACI Revealed

Date:

The election of the next Paramount Chief of Lango is scheduled for January 31st, 2024, in Lira City.

A highly placed source has confirmed that about seven clan chiefs have since been clandestinely conducting consultation with intent to aspire to succeed the outgoing Paramount Chief Yosam Odur,98.

For weeks now, clan chiefs drawn from both camps of the Lango Cultural Foundation, loyal to Odur and Tekwaro Lango, loyal to Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune, have been holding top-level meetings under the close advise of Lango Inter-Religious Elders to prepare for the election of the new Wonyaci of Lango.

Our source has since established that former Lango Cultural Foundation Prime Minister Dr. Richard Nam (Kole), who was fired by Odur, is among those who are interested in succeeding his former boss. Nam is the head of the Okii-Me-Amat clan, a senior reproductive health specialist, and a renown traditionalist who worked closely with Odur and other development agencies to promote health.

It’s now confirmed that Dr. Nam has been covertly consulting and negotiating for massive support among clan leaders in a bid to become the new Wonyaci of Lango.

Another source has also revealed that former Deputy Head of Mission to Washington, DC, Amb Dickson Ogwang Okul (Kole), who is currently the Head of Chancery at the Embassy of Uganda in Khartoum and also the clan chief, has also been approached by a section of clan leaders to aspire to become the next Wonyaci of Lango.

Amb. Ogwang, a senior lawyer who once served at the Directorate of Public Prosecution, is an international figure known for his dedicated public services both in Uganda and overseas. He is also the Minister in Charge of Foreign Affairs at the Lango Cultural Foundation. He once preached for immediate unity and reconciliation between Odur and Dr. Okune.

We have also established that MP Maxwel Akora of Maruzi is also among those with an interest in running for the position. Akora is a reputable political leader hailing from the family of former President Apollo Obote.

It has also been confirmed that Eng. Dr. Michael Odongo Okune, the head of the Okar-omwono clan and also the head of Tekwaro Lango, who stepped down to pave the way for peace and reconciliation, is also being fronted by a group of clan chiefs to become the next Wonyaci of Lango.

Dr. Okune, an accomplished international engineer and the former pioneer Executive Director of the Uganda Roads Fund, once worked with the outgoing Wonyaci Odur as the Head of all Lango in Diaspora, and he used his connections in government to hold the Lango Conference 2012, where President Museveni was the chief guest.

Dr. Okune, who is in his 50s, is also a renown development-oriented fellow whose impact and contribution to the promotion of Lango cultural values have gone above the belt.

According to the source, other people, including Fredrick Ogwal Oyee (Dokolo), the head of the Inomo Clan, a local businessman in Lango; Wasio Dickens Olak, the head of Adyegi (Apac); and Patrick Abal, the head of the Arak Ongoda clan, are also among those in the race.

Recently, a group of joint Lango Inter-Religious Elders held a reconciliation session that drew both factions together for the election of the new paramount chief in Lira City.

The outgoing Paramount Chief, Odur, has served since 2003 until recently, when he announced retirement plan and okayed the election of the new paramount chief due to his deteriorating health as a result of old age. He is believed to be 100 years of age.
