Members of Parliament from Lango sub regions want to meet President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to resolve on what they termed as malicious exclusion of Akii-Bua Memorial stadium from hosting AFCON 2027.
In a message released on Tuesday, December 5th by the Secretary General of Lango Parliamentary Group-LPG, MP Dr. Samuel Opio Acuti (Kole North), the law makers confirmed that they are seeking for a meeting with President Museveni over the matter.
“On 16th November 2023, LPG wrote to H.E the President of Uganda calling for an urgent meeting to discuss the exclusion of Akii Bua stadium construction to host AFCON 2027.The letter was delivered by the Secretary General, LPG to statehouse offices whose receipt was acknowledged. Several follow ups were made with the statehouse teams by Senior LPG members on the possible date for meeting the President,” said MP Dr. Opio Acuti
MP Acuti said whereas the request for an urgent meeting with the President was received, the meeting is yet to be scheduled and they’re doing everything possible to ensure the meeting is held.
“LPG would like to inform the people of Lango that it is committed to making the needed follow up on the meeting with the President and maintains its stand on Akii Bua as per its earlier resolution. We shall once again adequately articulate LPG and Lango’s position on Akii Bua for appropriate action.”
On 15th November 2023, LPG held a media brief at Parliament highlighting the malicious exclusion of Akii Bua Stadium from hosting AFCON 2027 describing it as a departure from the earlier official position of government on the floor of Parliament on 3rd October 2023 to construct two additional stadium to host AFCON.
The decision to have Akii Bua Stadium among the selected facilities was contained in the main CAF bid.The move to exclude Akii Bua has since sparked bitter reaction from Lango people including both local residents and leaders.
A section of local musicians have since composed a song by the title: Akii Bua Agerro I Lango (Akii Bua will be built in Lango), while other artists and designers have also printed T-shirts encrypted with words like, NO Akii Bua; No AFCON and No Akii Bua; No Votes among others.
