Date:

The new Won Nyaci (paramount chief) of Lango, Ambassador Dickson Ogwang Okul, has emphasized reconciliation, wealth creation, and advocating to spur youth employment in his acceptance speech.

While taking the oath of allegiance on Sunday, October 13th, 2024, during a ceremony held at the Lango Cultural Palace in the Teboke Trading Centre, Chegere Sub County, Apac district, Amb Ogwang applauded the outgoing Won Nyaci, His Highness Yosam Odur, for leading Lango for over 20 years.

This was presided over by the Commissioner of Oath, Lawyer Mike Abwang Otim and the outgoing HH Odur.

The outgoing Won Nyaci HH Odur has congratulated Amb Ogwang and urged him to take on his mantle with diligence by rightly leading the people of Lango into prosperity.

“I commit to work together with my team to ensure that, as Lango, the process of economic recovery and improvement of incomes at household levels is prioritized. Today marks a completely new error in the Lango chiefdom, and I do not take this lightly because it has been a long wait punctuated with numerous challenges and obstacles,” Amb Ogwang said.

He said, “As I accept the huge responsibility of the tasks that lie ahead of me as Won Nyaci Elect of Lango, I want to acknowledge that Your Royal Highness the Won Nyaci of Lango, Yosam Odur Ebii, you have kept the Lango banner high, you have remained resilient, and you have taught me that the truth will always win.”

According to the new leader, “With the support of HH Odur and other clan chiefs, he will continue seeking a peaceful path that allows all other Owitong and other sons of Lango to embrace peace, unity, and reconciliation, something he strongly believes is the heartbeat of His Excellency, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.”

“Together with my team, we commit that to kick off a process to ensure that the economic recovery process of Lango people and improvement of incomes at household levels is prioritized,” said Won Nyaci elect.

He listed coffee, cocoa, and oil seeds, among others, as potential cash crops in Lango and that they will lobby the government to go beyond the rhetoric of cattle compensation and commit to a process that will ensure that the sub-region is fully restocked.

On education, the Won Nyaci elect noted that “Lango Cultural Foundation will come up with programs that speak to issues of scholarships at different education levels, growth of education institutions from primary to institutions, collaboration of education with emerging concerns around the world, among others.”

Regarding the high unemployment rate in Lango, Amb Ogwang said his team will engage the government to ensure that industrial parks within the region are operationalized to create jobs for youth, thereby widening income for the people.

“Owitong, with their leadership, will work with the office of Won Nyaci to ensure that core family values aligned to Lango culture are being strengthened. The Wang ooo used to ensure that families instill values in the children,” said the Won Nyaci elect.

Amb Ogwang was declared the Won Nyaci elect of Lango after he tallied over 76,000 votes during an election in which three clan chiefs, including Prof. Dr. Richard Nam, Dr. Dan Okello, and Awitong Benjamin Okii, participated.

He will be enthroned soon, according to the report from the Lango Cultural Palace.
