MASSIVE: MP Auma Gives Hybrid Pigs to 18 Farmer Groups in Lira District

Date:

A total of 18 farmer groups in Lira District have received hybrid pigs (breed) from the area Woman representative, MP Linda Auma.

According to MP Auma, each group received five hybrid pigs, and it will be distributed to every group member on a revolving strategy every year.

MP Auma, who lobbied the pigs from the National Agricultural Advisory Services, said it’s meant to support farmers in their struggle to eradicate farmers.

Bony Omara, the Lira District Vice Chairperson who presided over the handover to beneficiaries on Friday, May 31, 2024, said this will directly empower local residents to boost their participation in wealth creation.

Omara said the selection of beneficiary groups was conducted last year, adding that each pig would cost between Shs300,000 and 400,000/=.

Boniface Okello Omara, a veterinary officer and also the Deputy Speaker of Lira district Council, said beneficiaries were trained on piggery management before being handed the pigs.

He described the hybrid (land-raised and large white) as the best for commercial farming since it breeds faster.

Serina Apio Otim, one of the beneficiaries from Ayami Sub County, applauded MP Auma for lobbying to support different farmer groups.

“I want to thank Linda Auma for always supporting us. I’m glad I have received this pig; recently, she gave us a poultry project, and we are so impressed with her services,” said Apio Otim.

In April 2024, MP Auma delivered a total of 14,000 kuroiler chicks worth 35 million shillings to 70 farmer groups in Lira district.

The delivery of kuroiler chicks (an improved chicken breed) is part of her wide initiatives to eradicate poverty among local residents through commercial farming, which is being promoted by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
