Mukono: Commercial Building Closed by Health Officials over Lack of Toilets

Date:

A commercial building in Mukono Central Division has been closed by the area health officials for lacking toilet facilities and causing health hazards to the community.

The closure of the business building occurred today, 28th December 2022, following an operation that was carried out by health officials led by the Health Inspector of Mukono Central Division to ascertain the sanitation of the area.

According to an eyewitness, the building in question is located in Nakibago village and it has been accommodating over 50 tenants.

“The occupants of this building are over 50 in number. They have been chased by health officials to go and look for another place to stay because they have been using a hole they dug as their place of convenience instead of toilets,” the eyewitness said.

She added that the pit that was dug to be used as a toilet filled up, which she said it’s a health threat as it can result in a cholera outbreak in the community.

According to Livingstone Mulindwa, the Health Inspector of Mukono Central Division and Focal Person for the Urban Sanitation Programme, all landlords are required to have toilet facilities at their buildings as required by law.

He cautioned that any landlord planning to do any construction should have set up basic toilet facilities prior to approval of building plans.

On Wednesday, 23rd November 2022, a total of 42 shops in Kayunga North Ward, Kayunga Town Council were closed over lack of toilets.
