President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has summoned an emergency National Resistance Movement Party Caucus meeting to discuss various issues of national importance.
In a letter dated April 18, 2023, the Government Chief Whip, Hamson Obua, said the meeting is scheduled to take place at State House Entebbe at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 20th.
According to GCW Obua, the meeting is slated for Thursday, June 20, this week, and the president intends to discuss with the NRM legislators the recently passed anti-homosexuality bill 2023.
President Museveni recently said he will discuss the issues of the proposed law with the parliament before assenting to it as a law.
“President Museveni, who is also the chairman of the ruling NRM party, will convene the party’s parliamentary caucus on Thursday this week to discuss, among other things, the Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2023,” the source confirmed.
The Anti-Homosexuality Bill, which was passed by the parliament in March 2023, proposes tough new penalties for same-sex relationships and criminalizes anyone identifying as LGBTQ.
Under the proposed law, anyone in the conservative East African nation who engages in same-sex activity or who identifies publicly as LGBTQ could face up to 10 years in prison.
Uganda is among the 30 African countries that have already banned same-sex relationships.
