Parliament Approves Ugx100 Billion for Akii Bua Stadium

Date:

Parliament has approved the proposal to allocate about one hundred billion shillings in the next financial year of 2024/2025 to kick-start the construction of Akii Bua Memorial Stadium in Lira City.

This was contained in the 2024–2025 budget framework paper that was approved by Parliament a few days ago.

Kole North County MP Dr. Samuel Opio Acuti said the budget framework will be submitted to cabinet for approval and later returned to parliament as a ministerial policy statement.

“My prayer is that cabinet should approve it because, as MPs, we have done 30% and the remaining one will be from cabinet now,” said MP Dr. Opio Acuti.

The ministerial policy statement is expected to be tabled in Parliament by March 15, 2024, as part of the updated budget framework for the new financial year 2024–2025.

This recommendation came in following earlier submissions by the Lango Parliamentary Group to the Education Committee and Budget Committee.

MPs who made submissions during the committee stage notably included: Hon. Omara Paul (Otuke), Dr. Agnes Atim Apea (Amolatar), Dr. Samuel Opio Acuti (Kole North), Hon. Akora Maxwell (Maruzi), Hon. Auma Linda (Lira District), and Hon. Acon Julius (Otuke).

Last week, Vice President Maj. (Rtd.) Jessica Alupo, Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among, and Sports Minister Peter Ogwang told mourners during the funeral of former Dokolo Woman MP Cecilia Barbara Atim Ogwal in Kole district that plans to have Akii Bua stadium constructed are underway.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni had earlier maintained the government’s position to have Akii Bua Memorial Stadium constructed in phases.
