President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has deployed Uganda’s High Commissioner to Ottawa, Canada Ambassador Joy Ruth Aceng, to head the newly established mission in the Common Wealth of the Bahamas.

Amb. JR Aceng, who presented her credentials to the Governor General of the Most Hon. Excellency Dame Cynthia A. Pratt on Monday, June 17th, welcomed the new tasks and described the bilateral relations between the two countries as strong and economically impactful.
“I presented my credentials to the Governor General, the Most Hon. Excellency Dame Cynthia A. Pratt. We had great moments with Her Excellency and discussed what our two great countries can offer each other,” Amb. JR Aceng.

She noted that Uganda stands to economically reap big benefits from the newly established mission in the Bahamas.

“I’m so excited to start my new role and assignment as Ambassador/High Commissioner Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. Thank you to H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Long live Uganda, long live Kaguta,” said Amb. JR Aceng.

Uganda’s move to establish the new mission in the Bahamas stemmed from the bilateral engagement that President Museveni had with the Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Honorable Philip Davis, on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Movement and G77 summits in January 2024 in Kampala.

While in the Bahamas, Ambassador Aceng held lengthy discussions with Hon. Perry G. Christie, the Minister for Economic Development, where they deeply discussed how the two Countries will boost trade and other relations.

Before engaging with the Governor General of the Bahamas, Amb. Aceng held a separate meeting with the Hon. Frederick A. Mitchell, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, and presented to him a copy of the d’udage of his letters of credence.

An estimated 80% of the Bahamian food supply is imported; this could provide a huge market for food crops grown in Uganda, according to Amb. JR Aceng.

The Bahamas relies heavily on tourism to generate most of its economic activity, and it accounts for about 70% of the Bahamian GDP and provides jobs for about half of the country’s workforce.
Agriculture and manufacturing form the third largest sector of the Bahamian economy, representing 5–7% of total GDP.
Major crops include onions, okra, tomatoes, oranges, grapefruit, cucumbers, sugar cane, lemons, limes, and sweet potatoes.
