PS Lamaro Cautions Schools against Raising School Fees

Date:

As senior five students prepare to return to school for their first term, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Education and Sports Ketty Lamaro has warned schools against increasing school fees.

The minister made the remarks on Thursday, March 23, 2023, during the senior five student selection process conducted in Kampala, Uganda’s capital, where over 2,000 head teachers participated.

“We have still noted that some schools are trying to defy the ministry’s directive and have increased fees even without the permission as guided by the ministry,” Ketty Lamaro said.

While speaking to head teachers in Kampala, the minister also stated that they are investigating schools that have been accused of violating the ministry’s instructions.

“We are gathering proof through investigations in order to deal with those defiant schools appropriately,” she explained.

The government also urged school administrators to be on the lookout for increased allegations of same-sex behavior in various schools across the nation.

“Our schools have been evaded by this monster called homosexuality, so we must be vigilant and clear so that we do not allow any space for this evil in our schools and in our nation,” said Ismail Mulindwa, head of basic and secondary education.

He also argued that schools should go judicial while offering students combinations that they qualify for because they decide students’ futures.

Stating that this is the only method to improve and sustain excellent school performance is a key factor in raising Uganda’s education standards.

According to some head teachers, a number of schools have increased the entry points for senior five students as a result of better performance in the Uganda Certificate of Education Examinations last year.

Others have kept the entry points in place to accommodate a large number of students who want to join the advanced level.
