A private security guard and his girl friend have been arrested over the alleged attempted murder of a senior two student of Lira Town College in Lira City.
The suspects have been identified as Francis Odom, a private security guard with SGA Company, and Rebecca Akello, also a student of Lira Town College.
SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, identified the victim as Morris Odongo, 19, a senior student at Lira Town College.
According to police, the incident occurred on Tuesday, April 11th, around 1930 hours, when a group of students, including the victim, reportedly attacked the suspect who was escorting his girlfriend back to the same school.
Police preliminary report said the students had escaped from school after jumping over the perimeter wall and attacking a duo who were just about to check inside through the same way. It’s a common practise at Lira Town College for students, both boys and girls, to escape by jumping over the perimeter wall.
It’s at this point that the suspect fired a bullet and injured the student on the right lower leg in an attempt to defend himself before they could take off from the angry students.
SP Okema said the suspect was arrested alongside his girlfriend and they are currently in police custody. He adds that both the firearm and a cartridge were exhibited by the police while the victim was rushed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
According to the police, there have been a series of complaints of theft and indiscipline raised by the communities against students of Lira Town College.
“We therefore want to advise and direct students to follow school rules and regulations as well as school programmes; they should avoid initiating personal programmes while at school. In a similar manner, management must also come up with strict mechanisms for handling such errands by students. We are going to use this incident to strengthen the need for community policing at Lira Town College and other schools,” Okema said.
