The Bobi Wine Politics of Identity Dangerous for Cohesion and Security of Ugandans

Date:

Kyagulanyi was born in Mpigi District, Central Uganda, but came of age in Kamwokya, one of the suburbs in Kampala.

It is here that he launched his music career in the early 2000s after he graduated from Uganda’s oldest university – Makerere University – with a degree in music, dance and drama.

He has produced songs that hit directly at government failures and excesses, and proclaimed himself the “Ghetto President”.

Now he wants to take the country’s top position of Head of State. It is a good idea, but let me navigate you through my concerns and fears- like many Ugandans may be face with.

I have lived in Uganda for many decades now, during which I was able to see for myself the suffering people went through in the hands of undisciplined security agents. Where those in power favored their tribemates. Most Ugandans especially those from Buganda should be the last to forget this experience.

From the look of things, Bobi Wine’s ‘people power’ movement is seemingly hyping the use of sectarianism as lens for political mobilization as evidenced in the language he uses in his communication through videos and audios to hoodwink the susceptible public, especially the urban poor.

In order to try to justify his mission, he tries to portray that he identifies with the poor man, yet he does not explain what programs and projects he has to lift them out of poverty. He is now trying to ally with the DP and FDC to try to put a skin to his politics of identity to try to give a national outlook.

The common features between the two is violent mobilization attributes. It should be remembered that reform agenda now FDC once used the ‘hammer against quarter pin’ slogan during its earlier days to mobilize Ugandans for political support. The rhetoric then made the population to fear the possible outcome should Besigye win that election and because of this, they gave NRM a whopping 69% vote.

Their actions have many expressions, some violent, the hooliganism, the provocation and dislike of the Police all suggest a contempt and at times a downright hatred for law and order, and for authority, that can image the character of those who want to take over the leadership of this country.

In a turn of events, Bobi Wine intends to move a private members bill to improve Police’s welfare an act of blackmail in a bid to compromise the unsuspecting public.

He is identifying with a few hooligans in the Kampala metropolitan area, whom he recycles during his so-called political mobilization trips as a show of support. Political victory cannot be achieved by use of a charged populace wandering without structures.

This kind of politics is spelling doom for our country. When you watch the video and the messages posted in social media; you start fearing for the future stability of this country. The anticipated regime will be full of revenge, state inspired killings, and lawlessness.

Imagine living in a lawless country, where there is no security. The lack of rule of law will bevisible under these circumstances, nepotism, looting, corruption and bribery will be the every-day facts that shall hinder socio-economic development as investors will also ran away. High unemployment rates among women will force many of them into prostitution while others will become victims of sex trafficking.

Weapons will freely be available. We shall be are in a country where no one can control anyone else. Because of the fighting, most of the country will become insecure. There will be no good functioning hospitals, no social services, no system of property.

The currency will be so devalued. No one will authoritatively own anything; your car will only be your car until an armed man comes to demand for it -that is going to be the law in this country.

Twebereremu which literally means every one for one ‘self will be the order of the day.

To flush back to the previous regimes for those who don’t know, or may have forgotten, or may be living in denial of the past, there were situations which presented anarchy for our people. Hardly a day passed which did not show us the effects of lawlessness in our country and this changed “normal life.”

The effects ranged from mere “inconveniences” to jeopardizing one’s financial or physical safety. We are not talking about the normal dangers of life per se – human beings lived with danger and mishaps to varying degrees all down through a long period of time.

There was a time not all that long ago that women died in childbirth on a regular basis. Pneumonia, though still dangerous, was a far deadlier killer.

We do not suffer all of the dangers today, at least to the same degree, as previously. There has always been lawless people in our midst – thieves, thugs, con-artists, murderers and politicians – but Government has taken serious measures to curb them.

I know there are challenges Government is facing, like even our homes, but this should not make us forget the improved security, improved social services have improved our quality of life.

If you move in Kampala at night, people are drinking and dancing till late- most of them youths and they go home safely.

So fellow Ugandans, take note – the destiny of this country is in our hands. Remember the saying that you will never know the value of something until you lose it.

We should be skeptical about the invisible forces fronting Bobi Wine – they want to destroy our country.
