Top Power Brokers Join Coronation Preparation of Wonyaci Elect Dr.Okune

On April 1st, Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune was declared the Wonyaci of Lango elect (paramount chief) after he was overwhelmingly voted by a total of 1,692 votes (91.1%) out of 1,858, while his opponent, Dr. Dan Okello, the head of the Guna clan, received 139 votes (7.5%).

The delegates who participated in this election were drawn from over 154 clans within the Lango tribal group, and unlike previously, this particular election was well attended to by over 120 clan chiefs in person.

Top power brokers within Lango, including educationists, tycoons, political leaders, presidential appointees, and local residents also gathered at the proposed site for Akii-Bua Memorial Stadium in Lira City during his election.

The Lango Council of Elders recently formed a national organizing committee for the coronation of Dr. Okune two weeks ago and announced a proposed budget of Shs2.8 billion to facilitate the event, which is tentatively scheduled for November 2, 2024.

The committee comprising of top power brokers in the region has also observed strong respect for the outgoing Paramount Chief Yosam Odur as he prepares to handover Lango Cultural leadership to Wonyaci elect.

A LIST OF TOP POWER BROKERS APPOINTED TO CORONATION COMMITTEES

A sneak peek into the recently formed coronation committee reveals that top power brokers are the majority members.

Top on the list is the Government Chief Whip, Hon. Denis Hamson Obua, as the overall chairperson, deputized by MP Maxwell Akora of Maruzi County, while the local coordination committee is being manned by Dr. Patrick Olet, a renowned business mogul in Lira City.

The Secretariat is being headed by MP Dr. Samuel Opio Acuti of Kole North, while MP Paul Omara is appointed to head finance and budget, with many powerful members including the Amolatar District Woman MP Dr. Agnes Apea, tycoon Bosco Ogwang Edola, Dr. Patrick Ogwel, Eng. Christopher Ebal, Dr. David Ogong, Dr. Chris Ongom, Dr. Rose Agoi, Mr. Dickson Odongo (King James), Mr. Sujit Singh, and others.

The invitations, accreditation, and protocol team will be managed by the Lango Parliamentary Group chairperson, MP Judith Alyek (Kole), with several key members including EALA MP George Odongo, Amb. Rebecca Amuge Otengo, MP Tonny Ayo, MP Moses Okot Bitek Junior, Dr. Isaac Orec, Mr. Jimmy Louis Onapa Cool, and Mr. Dean Denis Rwankote Omeni, among others.

According to the list, security and safety during the coronation will be coordinated by Lira RCC Lawrence Egole with several members, including Gen. Innocent Oula, Brigadier Peter Omolla, Fred Enanga, George Abudul RDC Apac, Dr. Prof. Emmy Okello, Dr. Bosco Omogo, and Major Dorothy Tapi, among others.

The welfare and refreshments team will be headed by Alebtong district Woman MP Dorcas Acen, with members including Kwania Woman MP Kenny Auma Lapat, among others, and transport and logistics will be manned by Oyam Woman MP Santa Alum Ogwang and other members.

In the mobilization and publicity docket, MP Linda Auma has been appointed to chair with several members, including senior members, MP Peter Ocen Akalo, Dr. Alex Ario Otema Awitong, Brigadier General John Patrick Otongo, and Mr. Felix Adupa Ongwec, among others.

MP Samuel Okwir Odwee of Moroto County will chair the entertainment and traditional performances committee with support from other members like MP Julius Acon of Otuke East and Eng. Richard Enen Okello, among others.

According to the tentative list, those who have also been appointed to the various coronation committees include Prof. Willy Okullo Awitong, Dr. Tom Ojok Oyuko, Prof. Opio Okaka Dokotum Academia, Prof. Nape Otim Scientist/Researcher, and Dr. Marus Eton Academia.

Others are Dr. Pius Achanga Academia, Eng. Joseph Odongo Bongonyinge,Eng. Pius Ojok Chairman Lango Community SS, Eng. Daniel Oyugi Awitong, Col. Tony Otoa Awitong, MP Jimmy James Michael Akena Obote, Brigadier General Bosco Okwir Omure Awitong, and Brigadier General Dr. Patrick Ocen, among many others.

It should be noted that the Chairperson of Lango Parliamentary Group, MP Judith Alyek (Kole Woman MP), and Health Minister Dr. Jane Aceng were the first notable leaders, in addition to several district leaders, legislators, bishops, and tycoons, among others, to congratulate Dr. Okune.

Recently, Minister of Gender, Labor, and Social Development Betty Amongi de-gazetted Odur to pave the way for the enthronement of Lango Wonyaci in November.
