The Uganda AIDS Commission has rallied students to shun drug abuse and embrace healthy living so as to guarantee their participation in the country’s leadership.

While delivering a special presentation as a key note speaker to hundreds of students’ leaders at Nabisunsa Girls School in Kampala on Saturday, July 1st, 2023, the Coordinator Public Sector at Uganda Aids Commission, Tom Etii, asked students not to be inspired by wrong practices but to embrace positive behaviours that can guarantee their success.

He said students should accept that they should live a purposeful life, which includes staying healthy and striving to achieve positive values and visions in life.

According to Etii, young people are the most vulnerable group to acquiring HIV, saying they are the majority of the current country’s HIV patients.

He advised students against living a reckless life and encouraged those with HIV to seek medical attention and not be stigmatized.

“If you want to achieve your dreams or aspire to be the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, you need to remain safe and think about your life because before joining any force, you are tested first,” Etii said.

He called upon students’ leaders to support one another towards living a purposeful life by promoting unity, diversity, and the development of the country.

Etii said that as students’ leaders, they should be exemplary to other students in order to be great leaders in the future and work towards the development of the country.

However, Rtd Maj. Okwir Rabwoni, a Coordinator in charge of Youth Affairs at the NRM Secretariat, advocated for patriotism and being empathetic.

He said that good leaders should construct and shape a leadership role to bridge the gaps by being united and turning diversity into strength.

During the same conference, the Office of the National Chairman of the NRM Party, which was represented by Administrator Hajjat Mariam Nakimuli, urged students to remain patriotic and embrace National values.

She urges students’ leaders to make use of the Office of the National Chairman of the NRM because it was set up to address their issues, among others.

Nakimuli, who was representing ONC boss SPA Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo Uzeiye, also said the office is currently undertaking an income-generating activity with the distribution of hybrid goats, chicks, sewing machines, and dryers. She rallied the student body to consider self-employment when out of school.

The seminar was organized by the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA), Kampala Capital City Chapter under the theme:  “Responsible Leadership in Diversity, Unity, and Inclusion.
