The Uganda People’s Defense Forces have revealed why a prominent mobilizer of the Opposition National Unity Platform is still in jail.
Col. Deo Akiiki, the UPDF Deputy Spokesperson, said Oliver Lutaaya, a prominent NUP mobilizer in Kampala, is in jail not because of wearing a military uniform or red beret but for other offenses.
He also explained that, contrary to claims by the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, Col. Akiiki said all NUP supporters who had been arrested for wearing red berets were cautioned and released.
“There isn’t anyone in jail for wearing a beret or UPDF uniform. Those who did were cautioned and let free like it was done to Hon. ABER,” said Col. Akiiki.
According to Col. Akiiki, NUP supporters Olivia have other cases to answer related to petrol bombs.
He further cautioned LoP Ssenyonyi to desist from peddling lies against the army.
“Get the facts right, Bwana Ssenyonyi. You are above this LoP,” added Col. Akiiki.
LoP Ssenyonyi had a few days demanded to know why the UPDF top authority had forgiven Kitgum Municipality MP Lillian Aber for wearing an army uniform without permission, yet several NUP supporters are rotting in jail for a similar offense.
“On the left is Lilian Aber, an NRM MP who wore a UPDF uniform, and she was let off the hook. On the right is Olivia Lutaaya, an NUP supporter in jail for over 3 years for wearing a red beret with a People Power badge. The one meant to be in jail is not; the one meant to be free is not!” said LoP Ssenyonyi.
