The Minister of Health and also the Lira City Woman MP, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, has embarked on the mass repair of broken boreholes within her constituency in a bid to resolve the rampant shortages of clean water sources.

A total of 12 boreholes that had initially broken down will all be repaired in phase one of her program and so far four broke boreholes in Abonyotingere,Abedpiny, Barkwoyo, and Obato cells, all within Lira City East Division, were repaired on Thursday.
Bonny Otucu, who is coordinating the mass repair of broken boreholes, said the first phase of repair will cost about Ugx30 million.

“We will repair 12 boreholes, and the cost is over thirty million shillings and the beauty of it is that the cost is high because we will use stainless steel pipe, which cannot rust. This will immediately address the current shortage of clean water sources. The repair is already ongoing and shall be done within a short period according to the program,” Otucu said.
Otucu further said they will install sensors in the device to monitor its functionality.
Otucu added that the current repair of boreholes is being conducted in close partnership with PAK4Humanity which is an organization led by Shannon Forester based in the United States of America.
Lira City is currently hit by rampant shortages of clean water sources as a result of inconsistent water supply from the National Water and Sewerage Corporation. As a result, most households, including schools, resorted to fetching water from boreholes, causing huge breakdowns due to the heavy workload on the few available boreholes.
In a bid to improve the reliability and the capacity of water supply in Lira City, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) and other development partners are executing several projects aimed at boosting quality and reliable water supply in the City.
Notably, there are planned projects for the area still in the pipeline and some of these include; Drilling 3No boreholes with a Mini treatment system at Lira University, Ngetta and Lango College, bulk transfer of water through a 12km DN300 pipeline from Angwetangwet to Lira University as a Permanent solution, raising island at intake and, raise the road to intake after talks with UNRA are concluded.
